How Many Seasons of Braxton Family Values Are There
Braxton Family Values is back, but a cloud hangs over season seven of the WE tv hit: Tamar Braxton's feud with the network, which became very public in the wake of her suicide try this summer. When news bankrupt in July, fans questioned whether the show would become on. Information technology did, and the new batch of episodes cover the family dealing with Tamar's mental health struggle. The supertease shows sisters Toni, Traci, Trina and Towanda, equally well equally their mother, Evelyn, reacting to the news.
"No 1 can know when something like mental affliction will loom or will surface," Trina tells ET over video chat, alongside Towanda. "This is a existent situation that's happening to our sister. ... We definitely bear upon on how it affected us, individually and collectively as a family. But we practise not in whatsoever style, shape, class or wise tell Tamar'southward story for her. That's only something she tin can tell."
When the trailer dropped terminal calendar month, Tamar slammed information technology as "disgusting" and defendant WE television set of "using my pain for their pleasure and ratings," adding, "I'm not filming for this season! They are doing this while I'chiliad not on the prove!!!!" This all came after Tamar said she felt like a "slave" to the network, challenge she had asked repeatedly to exist let out of her contract.
In response to Tamar's allegations and asking to be allow out of her contract, We television receiver released this statement: "Tamar Braxton has been an important function of our network family for more than a decade. Every bit she focuses on her wellness and recovery at what is clearly a hard and personal time, nosotros volition work with her representatives to honor her asking to end all future piece of work for the network. Nosotros wish her nothing just the best."
Tamar shared more of her feelings on Tamron Hall last calendar week, her first time speaking out publicly since attempting to accept her own life. She told the daytime host, "I'm however having a hard fourth dimension trying to effigy out, what's the premise [of ambulation this flavor of Braxton Family Values]? Is this to inspire, to help people with mental affliction, to aid Tamar with her new normal, with depression and anxiety?"
Now, the family is defending their conclusion to continue with the series, promising season vii does non exploit their sis.
"I recollect that we would do our fans and the viewers a disservice if we didn't talk well-nigh it," Towanda says. "So when the producers and the family unit collectively got together and said, this is what we're gonna do: We're not gonna tell Tamar'due south story, because it's her story to tell. Nonetheless, we can talk about how it affected u.s. as a family and individually when we establish out about it. How did we react? Those are real feelings, and I think that real families can respect the fact that we're going to bear upon it, but we're not gonna tell her story."
At the cease of the day, the sisters say it would be incommunicable to do the evidence without acknowledging what happened with Tamar.
"What we can also do is give a voice to that person that is like, oh my gosh. I'm in this moment of depression, I'yard having these mental health issues and I feel like I can't speak out, and if this family can go through this situation and become through this situation, maybe I can too," Trina says. "We always did this show to help someone else, non just ourselves. Because we've had our own counseling, we've had our own situations throughout the show, but as long as we tin help somebody, at that place'southward a reason to continue on to do the show."
The flavour premiere opens with a flash-forrard to the family learning of Tamar's suicide endeavor, each member speaking directly to camera, virtually as if they're speaking to Tamar, but Towanda says that wasn't their intention.
"We accept her number, and nosotros saw her a few weeks ago and we've actually had a personal, private conversation with her about everything that everyone isn't privy to, but it was definitely -- nosotros definitely wanted the viewer to understand that this is a serious situation and we accept information technology serious," Towanda promises. "We respect anyone in their boundaries of where they are mentally and emotionally."
"A lot of doctors volition tell you -- I'm a certified life coach -- then, a lot of doctors volition tell you that it's important for that victim to sympathise how the family reacted, or how your loved ones are feeling when you have decided to make that decision," she adds. "I think that'south very of import."
Trina and Towanda say at that place'south nothing that could intermission their sisterly bail with Tamar, but note that their relationship volition take its peaks and valleys. On Tamron Hall, Tamar best-selling that the family needed to work on forgiveness "on both sides" to motility forward from everything that transpired in 2020, and even the years earlier.
"This is my family, and I beloved my family," Tamar told Tamron. "I didn't desire to fight with my family, and I didn't want to exist an example of a family who fights and argues and ever accept turmoil. And, at present we're at the point where, it's assaults and threats, and this is not the testify that I created. I created the Braxton Family Values considering I wanted to exist an example, part of the Blackness customs with 5 Black astonishing sisters, all different walks of life, who can inspire and help, and people can learn from our experiences along the way. We wasn't instruction anything but beingness devilish, and I didn't want to do that."
"Information technology was important for Tamar to speak her truth, and that'south Tamar's truth," Towanda says in response. "Tamar has to tell her ain story and I retrieve that's just where we're standing with it. We're just respecting where she is mentally and emotionally, and if she felt that's what she needed to do to become it off her, considering sometimes y'all accept to get it out, then that'southward what she had to do."
"Tamar has to speak her truth, and her truth does non necessarily mean it's the truth," Trina adds. "But it is her truth and she has a right to display that, and you can't absolve someone else's truth. You just tin't, because that is how they feel and that's how they internalize their walk in life."
The sisters repeatedly drive domicile that Tamar's truth is not their truth, with Towanda saying, "Nosotros have a correct to speak our truth, as well, and that's our truth and how nosotros experienced it and what we went through, and emotionally how nosotros felt when we found out about it."
The sisters are still all in communication (even though Tamar unfollowed and/or blocked her siblings on social media), and Trina and Towanda say they have spoken with Tamar about their choice to go on with the reality testify without her. Tamar filmed a adept chunk of flavor 7 before the coronavirus pandemic hitting in March, and so she will appear in the first few episodes.
"Tamar's experience with the network is not necessarily mine or anyone else'due south feel with the show," Trina notes. "However, those things yet have to be addressed. If we did not address the fact that it happened, people would wonder, why didn't you guys say anything about what happened? Then it's like, yous're darned if you do and you lot're darned if you don't kind of thing."
Trina admits that the family "actually grappled with" whether to go along making the bear witness after Tamar'southward suicide effort before ultimately deciding they needed to, to share their side of things. It wasn't a determination they made lightly or quickly.
"I mean, this is a yield sign not a stop sign," she explains. "Y'all have to take suspension, and y'all take to really evaluate the reason why nosotros fifty-fifty did the show in the first place, and it was to evidence people that we become through the same things that everyone else goes through -- and this situation is non exempt from it. You know, as long equally nosotros continue to help people, we'll go along to have a show. And if we stop helping people, then it's time to get off the air -- including ourselves."
This is the 2nd time in the final couple of years that Braxton Family unit Values has hitting a yield sign. In 2018, the family went on strike from the show over a contract dispute. But Traci continued to moving-picture show, bringing on famous friends to fill the void of her sisters. The family eventually returned to the show with a series of special episodes centered on counseling with Iyanla Vanzant. It'due south those episodes that Tamar cites as the get-go of the stop for her on the show. Two instances of major upheaval in as many years begs the question, can this testify survive much longer?
"At this point I don't recollect any of us know that," Towanda offers, "especially with the temperature of everything that'due south going on, with COVID and everyone'southward trying to get dorsum into product … all those things. I don't think that whatsoever of u.s. really know. Merely I recollect what we do know is, as long as it makes sense, we'll continue doing Braxton Family Values."
On Tamron Hall, Tamar said she is "absolutely" done with docu-manner reality TV "forever and ever," and the sisters respect that decision. They also say they'll welcome Tamar back to the prove with open arms if she ever changes her listen.
"Tamar needs to get to a identify where she wants to practise things, equally opposed to what nosotros desire for her," Trina says. "It has to be what she wants for herself. … And so, we have to respect that and, you know, forge on, and if we come up to a identify where we can piece of work on something else in the hereafter, then nosotros will. Only information technology has to be her determination, because we want to make sure that her mental wellness is first and foremost."
The family's journey with Tamar'southward struggles is merely role of the story that will play out in flavor 7. The lead-up to Trina's hymeneals to Von Scales -- and then, the wedding itself -- is a center point of the first few episodes, and in true BFV fashion, it's a dramatic affair.
"It was very final infinitesimal, the flowers didn't testify upwards, cake-tastrophes, a whole situation happened without me knowing, considering my sisters kept it from me, thank god," Trina teases.
"I wanted to make certain it didn't bear upon Trina and Von on their special day," Towanda says of the mysterious moment. "I kept it from her so much so that she just constitute out virtually information technology on this past Friday, during an interview! Then, I recall I did an astonishing chore keeping it from her."
The season 7 supertease hints that information technology'southward Traci who causes some issues on the big day, as she tells Towanda, "I still don't similar y'all, but at present is not the fourth dimension" alee of the wedding ceremony. It seems like Traci is nonetheless holding onto some resentment over the contract dispute drama from years past.
"Traci is non only starting to create boundaries, she'southward now giving people consequences if they do cantankerous the boundaries," Towanda says. "I recall a lot of things were swept underneath the rug for and so long, and it was suppressed for and so long that Traci was just like, enough is enough. I'm tired of this."
"We still sometimes relate to each other as if nosotros are notwithstanding in an boyish phase," Trina adds. "Nosotros still revert dorsum to how we were when nosotros grew up, and we have to realize that we're all at present grown women … [and] we can't practise information technology this style whatever longer because nosotros are grown-ups at present."
On top of the family'due south ever-changing dynamic is the coronavirus pandemic, which stopped product on the show midseason. The sisters filmed some moments over Zoom, and recorded their to-camera confessional interviews over video chat, but the itch to see one another in-person grew over fourth dimension. The testify gave them the adventure to do that, equally Atlanta-based sisters Trina and Towanda flew out to Los Angeles to shoot some one-on-ane scenes with their family unit one time restrictions lifted.
"That was actually amazing because that was when we were able to meet each other," Trina reflects. "Toni, and Tamar, and Towanda, and Traci and myself, and Mommy, and that was an amazing thing, because I remember nosotros kind of had sis withdrawal."
"Even though nosotros work on each other'southward nerves, when we can't see each other -- it'due south i thing to non want to run across each other because you're mad, but when y'all're told that you can't, it's a horse of a dissimilar color," she continues. "And then, when nosotros were able to run across each other over again, it was a great reunion. It was bully."
Trina and Towanda hope those moments, the fun, dearest-filled ones, are what shine through this season. Yes, in that location's the heaviness of everything that unfolded with Tamar, but in that location'southward a lot of light, too.
"You lot guys are going to see the states laughing and existence happy and being jovial, and that's what I'm looking forward to the fans seeing," Trina says.
Braxton Family unit Values airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on WE telly starting November. 5.
